Long before a SAWA SAWA basket arrives at your doorstep, it begins as raw sisal fiber in the hands of a master artisan. In the quiet rhythms of rural Kenya, generations of women gather, turning ancient weaving traditions into modern masterpieces.
SAWA SAWA exists to create sustainable solutions to poverty by harnessing this ancient craftsmanship and empowering women through dignified work. To us, this mission is sacred. We believe fashion shouldn’t just look good,it should preserve culture, protect the environment, and honor the brilliant minds and hands that bring each piece to life.
The Heart of SAWA SAWA
Our brand’s heartbeat is rooted in community and connection. Founded in 2014 by Anne Drane, SAWA SAWA began with a simple but powerful idea, reconnect with cultural roots by sourcing handmade goods from rural Kenyan villages. What started at local markets and online shops has since grown into a formal tax exempt nonprofit brand dedicated entirely to woman led development.
Today, we partner with artisan groups spanning across rural Kenya. These women are no longer just practicing a craft; they are business owners, leaders, and pillars of their communities.
The Art of Slow Craftsmanship
Every SAWA SAWA bag or home decor piece is a lesson in patience and precision, built from locally sourced, eco-friendly materials like sisal .
Harvesting: The tough, resilient fibers are carefully extracted from the leaves of the agave (sisal) plant.
Dyeing: The fibers are washed, dried, and colored using traditional methods to create stunning, vibrant patterns.
Weaving: Using techniques passed down through generations, the women spend days, sometimes weeks, hand weaving a single item.
Because every single thread is guided by human hands rather than an industrial machine, no two pieces are completely identical. When you own a SAWA SAWA bag, you are buying a wholly unique, functional piece of art.
Impact Beyond Fashion
We envision a world where women live free from strife, poverty, and despair. Through fair trade and sustainable economic opportunities, the financial impact ripples instantly, our artisans use their earnings to start small farms, hire neighbors for harvests, provide childcare, and invest directly back into their villages.
But SAWA SAWA is far more than commerce. Our collective sales directly fund vital community programs designed to break cycles of poverty from the ground up:
1.Clean Water Access: We have installed critical rainwater collection systems in Sekenani Village within the Maasai Mara.
2.Solar Lighting: Partnering with Unite to Light, we distribute solar motion lights to reduce human-wildlife conflict in wildlife corridors, keeping our artisans safe and illuminated.
3. Menstrual Hygiene: Alongside Could You cup, we provide sustainable menstrual cups and reproductive education, keeping our artisans and their daughters dignified and active in school all month long.
