A Phrase You'll Hear All Over Kenya
"Sawa sawa" is Swahili, doubled up for emphasis the way Swahili often is. On its own, sawa means "okay" or "equal." Say it twice sawa sawa and it becomes something warmer and more emphatic: "all good," "we're aligned," "it's settled."
It's not a formal or ceremonial phrase. It's the opposite .it's what you hear in daily life all over Kenya and East Africa. A vendor confirming a price. A driver confirming a route. Two friends closing out a conversation. It's a small phrase that does a big job: it means the matter is understood, agreed on, and resolved. No tension left. Everyone's on the same page.
That's exactly why it became our name.
Why It Fit Our Mission
Our founder, Anne, first connected with Kenya in 2014, when her mother traveled to rural villages in search of authentic, handmade Kenyan products. The women she met kept returning with more and more baskets, more woven pieces, more stories ,all made by hand, all in need of a market. What started as a small hobby, selling those pieces on Etsy and eBay, grew into something much bigger: a nonprofit built on a simple belief that empowering a woman lifts up her entire community.
Somewhere in that process, "sawa sawa" stopped being just a phrase we heard on our trips and became the right description of what we were trying to build. Our work is a partnership ,not charity handed down, but an agreement between equals. We show up, we listen, we provide access to markets and resources; the artisan women bring generations of craftsmanship, knowledge of their materials, and creative vision that's entirely their own. Neither side is doing the other a favor. It's sawa ,equal footing.
And when a piece comes together ,when the agave fiber is harvested, woven, finished, and finally in a customer's hands, a girl is able to go by her daily activities normally through the menstrual products we support them with,a community has access to water and food ,that's the "sawa sawa" moment. Everything lined up. Everyone's better off. It's settled, and it's good.
More Than a Name
We chose a Swahili phrase instead of an invented brand word on purpose. Every time someone says our name, they're saying a real, living piece of Kenyan culture ,not a marketing word we made up in Austin. That matters to us, because cultural preservation is as central to our mission as economic empowerment is. The name itself is a small act of honoring where this all began.
So the next time you see SAWA SAWA on a tag, a bag, or a basket, you'll know: it's not just a name. It's a greeting, an agreement, and a promise ,that what's good for the artisan on one end should be just as good for you on the other.
